Salto Alto 2023
The project is a video-performance piece documenting the construction of a four feet tall sculpture made out of steel and concrete based on the shape of a high heel. During the performance, I constructed the piece using metalworking tools such as a welding machine and an angle grinder to build the metal base structure of the sculpture, and then wrapped the form with a wire panel that gave structure to the layer of cement that went on top of it. Following this narrative, after the sculpture is done, I climb
on top of it, as if wearing the high heel. The whole process was documented in my studio, an empty white room, while I was wearing a lingerie set designed for the performance..
The imagery produced by the piece aims to create a space where the male-dominated field of sculpture and metalwork can be invaded by queer femme aesthetics. Through thinking of sculpture as a way to construct my identity - after an episode where one of my pieces that would’ve been part of an exhibition, was censored, for clear trans-discriminatory reasons; I was instigated to claim for an autonomous way of creating a platform to showcase my work while celebrating identity, even if that meant the literal creation of a pedestal for me to stand on and claim visibility.

Video-performance piece thought around a main sculpture; this being a pink sofa that has its half-covered with concrete blocks. The video documents the performer coming into the scene with a sledgehammer and completely destroying the part of the sofa that is covered with concrete - to then access it fully and be able to lay on it.

Performance
Photo documentation of the piece I performed at the Parsons Fine Arts building in my own studio during four hours of the Open Studios event in the Fall of 2021. I had the bottom half of my body covered in a white block of self-hardening foam and used a mallet and a wood chisel to chip away the pieces of material that made up the form that my body was inserted in, while wearing long pink acrylic nails.
